PHOTOSHOOT 1 SELECTIONS

PHOTOSHOOT 1

Throughout this photoshoot, I experimented with reflections using a mirror to raise ideas on how magazines are affected people's own perceptions of themselves. I also asked the models to do their hair and makeup as they normally would and wear their usual clothes, so I could capture an accurate and realistic representation of them. I took these photos in natural environments to reflect the naturalistic approach of my photography. I levelled these photos in photoshop and then converted them into black and white so the focus of the image remains of the people in the photo themselves and the message behind the photos.

PHOTOSHOOT 1 DEVELOPMENTS - DIGITAL NEGATIVES, PHYSICAL DISTORTIONS AND DIGITAL EDITS

In this set of images, I have experimented with digital negatives. For this process, I inverted my image in photoshop and printed it onto acetate. I then took light sensitive paper in the darkroom and placed it beneath my acetate and exposure it to different levels of light, to find the correct level of exposure. I then developed the light sensitive paper, used a fix solution, a stop solution and placed the paper in the water bath. In this case, around 7 seconds of exposure was the correct exposure. I then produced a larger image with the correct exposure using the same process.

Within the second set of images in this section, I have experimented with physical distortions using methods such as painting and collage. The techniques used in this work was inspired by mixed media artists such as Rosanna Jones. These physical distortions reflect the distorted perception of the self that are created by societal beauty standards and the unrealistic portrayals of women in the media, that create insecurities for impressionable people.

Within the next set of images I have experimented by digitally distorting the images, to reflect the distorted reflections societal beauty standards can cause. I have experimented with digital collages.

Within the final set of images I have experimented with techniques such as using bleach to physically distort images and collage, I have also combined physical techniques such as bleaching images with digital techniques such as digital collage.

PHOTOSHOOT 2

Throughout this photoshoot, due to the current pandemic and lockdown I was limited as to which subjects I could photograph. I could only use people that lived in my house and as I had already photographed my brother for this project, I took inspiration from photographers such as Cindy Sherman and the self portraiture nature of their images. Within these images, I have captured myself and I have experimented with shutter speed to create blurred effects within them to distort the images. These distortions reflect the distorted reflections of ourselves, overall post produced images create. These images are also extremely posed and staged demonstrating how we portray ourselves in a certain light throughout the media and this eventually leads to insecurities within ourselves when we are not looking 'our best'. Within these images, I used a tripod and set the camera up on a self timer, I found it difficult to frame the images and see exactly what I was taking as I was in the images myself. However despite this some of the images were still successful.

PHOTOSHOOT 2 DEVELOPMENTS - DIGITAL EDITS AND PHYSICAL DISTORTIONS

In this set of images I have experimented with layering, mixing black and white photography and coloured photography, collage and mirroring, to reflect the distortions that are created around how we look by societal beauty standards. In the second set of images I have used bleach to strip ink away from the images and created physical distortions.
